How to upload video to Google Drive

Google Drive is, without a doubt, the basis of almost everything we do with our Google accounts on a daily basis. Due to the 15 GB of free storage space we receive with our accounts, we may as well store videos in Drive to save space on our hard drives – here’s how…


When we send and receive files using Gmail, they are saved to Google drive. If we select the option of storing high resolution images in Google Photos, this is deducted from the storage capacity of 15 GB on Google Drive.

When we create documents in Google docs or spreadsheets in Google Sheets, all our files are saved in the cloud on our Google Drive. Today, Google Drive is an essential part of our Google experience.

Since we receive 15 GB of storage on our drives for free, we can use it to store videos as well.

Uploading Videos to Google Drive

You can upload videos to Google Drive just like any other file format. On a computer, you can do this in one of two ways: through a web browser or through the Google Drive app on your desktop.

You can use whatever method is most comfortable for you; both produce the same result with minimal effort.

By web browser

Using a web browser to upload a movie to Google Drive is as easy as dragging and dropping the file or using the dialogs provided by your web browser to choose the file from your device’s storage. Here is a step by step guide:

  1. Open a new tab in your browser and go to https://drive.google.com, where you’ll need to sign in if you don’t always stay signed in.
  2. Navigate to the Google Drive folder where you want to download the video from your device.
  3. On your computer, navigate to the location of the video you intend to upload to Google Drive using the appropriate file browser in the operating system of your choice.
  4. If you haven’t minimized your web browser, it should be running in the background of your file browser window, with Google Drive displayed in the browser tab. Simply drag and drop the video file to your Google Drive from your file browser window.

Alternatively, if you’re unfamiliar with drag and drop, or just prefer to upload directly from Drive, follow these steps to upload your video to Google Drive:

  1. Open a new tab in your browser and go to https://drive.google.com, then sign in if necessary.
  2. Just below the Google Drive logo, you’ll see a button with the word “New” on it. Click on it to open the drop-down menu.
  3. Select “Upload File” from the drop-down menu.
  4. Navigate to the location of the video, select it, and click Open. The video will now be saved to the Google Drive folder of your choice.

Via the desktop app (Mac and PC)

On Windows, the Backup & Sync app integrates with Windows File Explorer, allowing you to drag and drop your videos from your local storage to a Google Drive location of your choice.

The app also makes it easy to set up two-way sync between your computer’s storage and Google Drive on macOS.

To sync with Google Drive, you can choose to sync a single folder or multiple folders from your local storage, either in the root folder or in a specific folder.

You can also access Google Drive from macOS Finder and download videos directly to your Drive from there.

During the installation process, the Google Drive backup and sync software will ask you to sync folders with Google Drive. You will be able to choose a folder of videos to upload to Google Drive during the configuration of the application if you have one.

When you do, the app will upload your videos to Google Drive for you. However, if you only have one video to upload to Google Drive, the web browser technique is your best bet.

Setting up Google Drive on your computer is beneficial if you often use the capabilities of the app or need the functionality of the app for a specific purpose.

Otherwise, simply access your Drive by going to https://drive.google.com.

Here’s how to upload videos to your Drive through the desktop app:

  1. Open a new browser tab on a Windows or macOS machine and go to https://drive.google.com, signing in if necessary.
  2. A notification with the caption “Get Drive for Desktop” appears in the lower left corner, highlighted in blue. When you click on the Download button, your download for your particular operating system will begin.
  3. Install and run the Backup & Sync app on your computer, then sign in using your Google Account.
  4. Select the folder where your videos are saved.
  5. You will be asked if you want to sync Google Drive with your computer in the next step. Select this option if you want to synchronize the contents of Google Drive with your computer. If it’s not unchecked for you, uncheck it. You will still be able to upload videos to Google Drive if you choose this option.
  6. Visit Google Drive and locate the place on your computer where you want to download videos. If a folder already exists, choose it; otherwise, create a new folder and name it appropriately for the future efficiency and effectiveness of data organization.
  7. Now just drag the video (s) you want to download from your computer storage space to your video folder on the Backup & Sync app.
