Why is the local numbering plan changing?
On July 16, 2020, the FCC passed an ordinance (FCC 20-100) approving 988 as a 3-digit speed dial code to reach the National Lifeline for Suicide Prevention, starting in July.

What will the new numbering procedure be?

When will the change of numbering become mandatory?
As of October 24, 2021, you must dial 10 digits (area code + phone number) for all local calls. If you get this recording, you must hang up and dial again using the area code with the 7-digit phone number.

How does this affect PSAP service and equipment providers?
All local calls within area codes 516, 607, 716, 845 and 914 that are currently dialed with 7 digits should be dialed using the area code + phone number. All PSAP equipment, such as speed dialers and call forwarding equipment with a number among area codes 516, 607, 716, 845 and 914 and programmed to dial only 7 digits must be updated or reprogrammed to dial 10 digits (area code + phone number) for all local calls in area codes 516, 607, 716, 845 and 914. What other changes need to be made?

When can I start dialing 988 to join the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline?
As of July 16, 2022, dialing “988” will direct your call to the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. Customers should continue to dial 1-800-273-8255 (TALK) to reach Lifeline until July 16, 2022.
