Firefox’s private browsing mode improved for you

There are many reasons why you might want to keep something that you do on the web to yourself. You might be looking for a ring for your future fiancé, researching what those mysterious rashes could be, or reading a salacious celebrity gossip blog. This is where private browsing mode comes in handy. This year we have improved and added new advanced features to our private browsing mode. Before sharing more about these new features, we wanted to share some of the misconceptions about private browsing.

One of the best Common Myths About Private Browsing (in any major web browser) is that it makes you anonymous on the Internet. The private browsing mode on Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox is primarily designed to keep your activity private from other users on the same computer, but websites and Internet service providers can still collect information about your visit even though you are not connected. How we improved the private browsing mode

Firefox Private navigation was designed to give you extra protection. We believe It is vitally important that we do everything possible to protect your private browsing history from internet tracking companies. Trackers from these companies are ubiquitous, hiding in web pages to track you around the web and create detailed profiles about you based on your browsing habits. To combat this problem, Firefox introduced blocking trackers for Windows private browsing. Blocking the tracker prevents content tracking (images and scripts designed to spy on you) from a long list of tracking companies to be loaded in your browser.

This year, the Firefox team added new privacy protections to incognito mode and strengthened the ones we have. We were determined to provide additional privacy protections in private browsing mode. Here’s a list of the advanced privacy protections we’ve added to private browsing:

Total Cookie Protection – Stop cookie tracking with separate cookie jars

Full cookie protection prevents cookies from tracking you around the web. Total Cookie Protection joins our suite of privacy protections called Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP). By combining total cookie protection with supercookie protections, Firefox is now armed with very strong protection against cookie tracking. Full cookie protection works by maintaining a separate “cookie jar” for each website you visit. Whenever a website, or third-party content embedded in a website, places a cookie in your browser, that cookie is confined to the cookie box assigned to that website, so it is not allowed to be shared with another website.

Smart Block – Ensure smoother connections, even on Facebook

SmartBlock, our advanced tracker blocking mechanism, combines a great web browsing experience with robust privacy protection, ensuring that you can always use third-party login buttons, including Facebook, to log into sites Web, while providing strong defenses against cross-site tracking. SmartBlock provides local replacements for blocked third-party tracking scripts. These replacement scripts behave only enough like the originals to make sure the website is working properly. They allow sites based on the original scripts to load with their functionality intact. SmartBlock replacements come with Firefox, so the chances of third-party tracker content loading and following you are very slim, unless you interact with the buttons to log into Facebook. Also, the replacements themselves do not contain any code that would support the tracking functionality.

Default HTTPS – Automatically establish a secure and encrypted connection over HTTPS

Insecure connections are not only a risk to your online security, they also reveal the entire content of the websites you browse to anyone who can monitor your internet traffic, including your ISP. In Windows private browsing, Firefox will prioritize secure web connections by default for every website you visit. Firefox’s default HTTPS policy in Private browsing windows represents a major improvement in the way the browser handles unsafe web page addresses. As shown in the figure below, whenever you enter an unsecured URL (HTTP) in the Firefox address bar, or click an unsafe link on a web page, Firefox will first try to ” establish a secure and encrypted HTTPS connection to the website. In cases where the website does not support HTTPS, Firefox will fall back automatically and establish a connection using the legacy HTTP protocol instead:

You are always protected even when you are not in incognito mode

In addition to our protections in private browsing, we make an effort to combat tracking in daily browsing in Firefox in general, and have made many protections for normal windows. Our enhanced Tracking Protection feature blocks most of the worst cookies, fingerprints, and social media tracking cookies in all windows by default.
